Matt pulled the mail out of the letterbox and flicked through it. Bill. Bill. Bill. Junk mail. Bill. Credit card statement. He sighed and sat down to read through them. They all seemed fairly normal until he reached the water bill. Three thousand dollars. How on earth could it be that much?! He checked again before slamming the letter onto the table. He paced around the house, checking all the taps and toilets to make sure they weren’t dripping. He even checked the garden tap. He found nothing. Matt headed out the front and turned off his water meter, almost glaring at the numbers. They continued to tick over, even though the water had been shut off. Matt wasted no time, he called his local Artarmon Plumber to deal with the problem.
The Plumber scouted out the house and walked around the back yard. There were no soggy patches, no evident signs of a leak. There were no damp walls or stains and under the house appeared dry as well. The Artarmon Plumber arranged for a pipe locating specialist to attend to find the problem. The Specialist attended the next day and found the leak. It was outside under a large tree. The Plumber discussed the issue with Matt and they agreed to dig out the damaged section to repair it. So the local Plumber set about his work, digging down to reveal the copper pipe. It soon became obvious what had happened.
The tree roots had been growing thickly around the pipe. The roots had slowly been bending the copper piping until the force had caused the pipe to split. The Artarmon Plumber would be able to replace that section, but it would make more sense to divert the water course around the tree, further away from the damaging roots. Matt agreed and watched as the Plumber began digging out a new course. The new section was installed and connected to the existing lines, effectively diverting the water around the tree to save the pipes from any further issues. The Plumber tested his work, and then checked the meter. With the water supply off the numbers were no longer ticking over!
